What is Financial Engineering?
Financial engineering is a multidisciplinary field relating to the creation of new financial instruments and strategies, typically exotic
options and specialized interest rate derivatives. The field applies engineering methodologies to problems in finance, and employs financial
theory and applied mathematics, as well as computation and the practice of programming.
Despite its name, financial engineering does not belong to any of the fields in traditional engineering. Financial engineering is normally
employed in the securities and banking industries. It is also used by quantitative analysts in consulting firms or in general manufacturing
and service firms, in corporate treasury, corporate finance and risk management roles
Do you provide work permits?
No. Currently we only accept applications from EU citizens or those with the legal right to work in the UK
What A Level grades/leaving cert grades do I need to apply?
Financial Engineering: 500points at leaving cert or 450 points to include higher B3 in Maths, 3 A’s at Alevel to include an A in Maths.
Software Engineering: 450 points at leaving cert, BBB at A level
IT and Law: 400-500 points at leaving cert, BBB at Alevel
What Degree do I need to apply?
Successful candidates will need to have already gained or on track to receiving a minimum of 2:1 degree classification in a Numerate or
Technical discipline. e.g finance, economics, computer science and engineering.
I don’t meet First Derivatives minimum academic requirements. Is it still worth applying?
At First Derivatives we do understand that due to extenuating circumstances academic performance can be impacted and you may still apply if you
wish, however due to demand on places, we cannot guarantee that you will pass our initial screening if you do not meet our academic criteria.
I have been educated outside the UK. Can I still apply?
Yes. You must provide full details of your overseas qualifications on your CV. You will need to give the names of the qualifications, the years
you completed them and also the individual subjects and grades where applicable. Please do not convert academic achievements to the UK system,
we will do this for you.
I have been asked to attend an interview, what will this involve?
Interviews are held in our Headquarters in Newry. We ask all candidates called forward for interview to leave a four hour window free in the afternoon.
The interview consists of A brief presentation about our company and the options programme, 2 individual interviews with members of our HR department,
a group interactive activity and a logic test.
What happens after the interview?
After your interview we will be in touch to let you know if you have been successful or not. In some instances we will place candidates on file if they of
interest to us but there are no immediate vacancies. We will always endeavour to keep candidates informed on their application.
“The Options Brochure mentions a benefits package of accommodation and expenses, what does this entail?”
Whilst on client site all staff live in First Derivatives accommodation with other staff. They are also entitled to a generous expenses package covering subsistence,
travel and other costs incurred while living on site.
Accommodation is also provided when based in Newry for those who live too far away to commute.
Does First Derivatives support certification in approved exams?
First Derivatives will support certification in approved exams but will only pay for fees if the exam has been passed.
