Matthew – My Technology Sales Story
By: Matthew Jenkinson
My First Derivatives journey began on the 2nd of July 2018. I packed up my bags in Dublin and made the long trip across the border to begin the next chapter of my life in Newry. I didn’t know what the next 12 months placement had in store, but I was lucky enough to join Aislinn & Brian’s Global Business Development team. The team focused on expanding Kx into industry verticals such as Manufacturing, Telco, Utilities, Automotive, and Space, which opened my eyes to the corporate world and all things Big Data.
The initial weeks consisted of multiple workshops and discussions with subject matter experts, surrounding the technology and kdb+ applications across various sectors. At first it was quite overwhelming, however, I soon got up to speed and I became familiar with many aspects of the business in an ever-changing technology environment.
I have always had a keen interest in Technology and Business, so having the opportunity to work as part of the Business Development team in a dynamic technology company provided the perfect balance of both! My role involves a mixture of inbound and outbound lead generation and growing Kx’s presence across these industry verticals, whilst also supporting our sales teams across Europe, the Americas, and Asia. From day one, I have been given the same responsibilities and expectations as senior staff members, which has been challenging at times but also very rewarding.
During my time with FD, I was privileged to have represented Kx at the Smart Data Engineering event in DCU’s Alpha campus to learn more about AI and Big Data topics. I also attended a Kx meetup in Dublin, which was an enjoyable and interesting experience, in particular, becoming familiar with our work with BrainWave Bank.
However, It has not all been about work, as from day one I was made to feel part of the “FD family”. We have had many an enjoyable and eventful team night out in Belfast, Carlingford and Narrow Water Castle. I also have to mention the weekly football sessions with the lads, Yoga Thursday with the girls and monthly Thursday clubs followed by a night in the famous Cobbles. I was fortunate that my accommodation in Newry was both central to work life and social life. However, living above a Four Star Pizza takeaway, and with a serious addiction to the Newry’s “Fifteens”, my suit’s waistbands are feeling the strain!
Reflecting on the past 12 months, I feel I have matured in both a personal and professional capacity. I have gained so much confidence since embarking on my FD journey a year ago, and have made friends for life with some of the young (Jordan King), the old (Kevin Brien) and the legendary (Michelle Miskelly) members of the team. It has also been a great personal achievement to see my opportunities progress through the pipeline and receive recognition from Senior Management. It has been an exhilarating year, in which I have learnt invaluable skills and experienced the realities of working in a dynamic technology company.
The knowledge I have gained, the skills I have acquired and, the people I have met, during my FD adventure are the reasons why I would highly recommend the experience and I hope to have the opportunity to work for FD again after graduation.
