Paul – My Technology Sales Story

My career at FD began back in May 2016. Having moved over from my native Scotland, I did not know a soul in Newry (our HQ). When I arrived I was immediately struck by the famous Irish sense of hospitality and received a very warm, friendly reception as I was welcomed into the team straight away.

It did not take long for me to settle into life in County Down. There has been much to keep me occupied. For example, Newry is a fanatical Gaelic football town. Everyone is obsessed with the GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association). Shortly after my arrival it was time for the All-Ireland Championship and I went along to Páirc Esler to watch Down lose (something I’m told is a regular occurrence) to Longford in a thrilling match that ended up going to extra time. I have also had lots of fun at various events that Newry hosts annually, such as Oktoberfest (German beer festival) and the Iúr Cinn Fleadh, Newry’s traditional Irish music festival. Although I must say, as a Glaswegian I’m disappointed that there’s not a deep fried Mars bar to be found anywhere in sight!

In my work life, from the outset I have felt very privileged to be part of this dynamic, home-grown Irish company. Working as part of the non-finance product team has been a fantastic opportunity. On a daily basis I get the chance to deal directly with corporate-level decision makers at world-leading companies and brands from around the globe. I enjoy the challenge of helping to grow our business across new and exciting industry sectors, from Manufacturing to Pharmaceuticals, Telecommunications, Utilities, Retail and Space!

I’ve been lucky enough to travel to some wonderful places with the job so far. One of the highlights was my week spent in sunny San Diego, California for the DistribuTECH conference. This was a great event that allowed me to spend some quality face time meeting with senior management from the top international players in the Utilities market (as well as fun-filled evenings in the restaurants and bars of San Diego’s historic Gaslamp Quarter). Another great experience was my time in Berlin, for the Mobile Edge Computing Congress. By day, my time was spent taking part in fascinating meetings with some of the world’s biggest names in the Telco industry. By night, I was free to explore the beautiful, culture-filled German city and its many memorable sights (and beer halls). I have also recently spent a week in London getting trained up with one of our new partners in Cybersecurity. I am very excited to be one of the first on the team to be working directly with a new partner in all things sales and marketing.

FD has given me the chance to explore Ireland first hand, with business trips, conferences and events in Belfast, Dublin and Limerick. I’m also really looking forward to our team’s upcoming ‘Mystery Tour’ night out, which will take us to several secret locations on the Emerald Isle. One of the main perks of the job, in my opinion, is the vibrant social element to working here. I always look forward to our twice weekly lunchtime five-a-side football matches- forever a source of friendly rivalry in the office. The FD Christmas parties and race nights are always legendary, as are the regular team nights out, which often see us ending up enjoying a few drinks, not just in Newry, but in Carlingford, Dundalk, Belfast or Dublin.

I’ve really revelled in my journey so far at FD and I’m sure it will be just as exciting in the years to come.
