Shannon – My Technology Sales Story

Never in a million years did I think that one year after starting at First Derivatives, I’d be sitting in the Financial District in London, in a meeting room that would give the Ritz a run for its money; presenting to a Chief Financial Officer. Talk about getting responsibility from the get-go!

In the short period of time that I have worked at FD I have had the opportunity to represent the company at numerous events, both internally and externally. From the glamourous Business Awards in the Canal Court Hotel, to the Women in Tech Event in the impressive Titanic Quarter Belfast and most recently, our Innovate in the Cloud event, hosted in one of Ireland’s top-rated tourist attractions, The Epic Museum in Dublin; I have had the opportunity to meet with some of the leading financial institutional leaders.

My initial 4-week training programme covered a range of areas including finance, consultancy services, industry and funds. We took part in on the job training with SME’s and sales managers which broadened my knowledge on pitching, buying signals and sales strategies. In my latest adventure with FD, I was flown to London for some further sales training and to attend client meetings. I jumped at the opportunity to enhance my knowledge, especially when it included a plane ticket, rooftop bars and meeting our London sales team! With all the fun aside, the trip was a great learning experience. I had the chance to spend time with senior management, attend workshops and meet with several clients from tier one investment banks.

Some of my greatest highlights to date, include developing relationships with some of the world’s leading financial institutions in London, Frankfurt and New York. Another proud achievement has included helping to secure a Global Master Services Agreement with a new client in London, which resulted in 5 consultants being placed on site. I also work very closely with our US team and have opened up several new relationships which lead to consultants being placed onsite in New York. These wins give me great job satisfaction, knowing my role helps our graduates take their first steps towards their own career path, whilst also helping me fund my trip to Thailand through our generous remuneration package.

As well as managing my own key accounts, I have had the opportunity to work across various industry-leading campaigns. I have been involved in all things Cloud, IBOR, KYC/AML, Financial Crime and something that you may not have heard about …..BREXIT!!

Looking back on my FD experience over the past year, one thing that cannot be overlooked is my team and the wider FD Family. One of my favourite team memories is our “Thirsty Thursdays” in Cobbles, which is in a dangerously close perimeter to the office (it’s always fun when there is a Kitty involved…) In fact, every food place in Newry looks like something from an episode of Suits during our weekly team lunches! FD also love giving back to the community, with my team regularly attending local charity quiz nights.

From a very flustered first pitch to now presenting before C level clientele across the globe, FD has provided me with unique experiences and career progression opportunities within the last 12 months.
My day starts in Dublin and ends in Toronto so the motto of living local and working global applies to my role in every sense of the word. I am very lucky to have found a company that invests time into my progression both professionally and personally.

I’m truly looking forward to seeing what the future brings with FD.
