Why did you choose a career in Capital Market Consulting with FD?

After graduating in 2007 with a degree in Finance from Queens University Belfast, I spent some time travelling in the US and Australia. Arriving back in Northern Ireland in 2008, I had a decision to make regarding my future. Luckily at the time there was a local newspaper article on First Derivatives, they had recently moved to new offices and were launching a graduate program. I applied for a place in the graduate program. I was interested in the company as it was a small local company operating on a global scale. FD has allowed me to develop as a person both professionally and academically. Throughout my time with the company I have been exposed to the many different aspects of international banking. I have had roles on business support team, testing and implementation team, fixed income and foreign exchange trading systems and a reporting analyst in a Anti Money Laundering and Fraud department.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

I am currently working on a team that is responsible for the testing and implementation of a new trading system for a high profile client. One of the most pleasing aspects of the role is getting to learn from an experienced senior member of staff and also using my experience to help new younger members of staff. Working as part of a good team makes the role much more enjoyable. The role has also allowed me to interact with the Clients senior members of staff and given me exposure to all aspects of completely a project successfully.

What does your current working day look like?

To begin the day, I will have a team meeting to discuss the current workload on the project, outline the workloads of each member of the team, discuss any issues that have arisen the previous day and then assign each member of the team work tasks depending on the needs of the project. After the meeting, I will have my own responsibilities to take care off as well as being available to help any of the other members of the team. Twice a week I will have status calls with the client to discuss deadlines and current issues encountered on the project. Providing weekly status reports to the client and internal FD management is one of the core jobs of my role.
